About
Serving good-looking images at scale is hard. New codecs promise to make it easier and often do not, because the encoder matters more than the format. Halide Compression builds encoders and measurement tools that close that gap.
What we do
We license Iris-WebP, and we consult on codec optimization, custom encoder development, and image and video pipelines. Past work includes video compression for Fortune 10 clients and texture compression for game studios.
Gianni Rosato
Founder & Compression Engineer
Gianni Rosato founded Halide Compression and wrote Iris-WebP. He has worked on AV1, VP9, and WebP encoders, both building new ones and improving existing ones.
Gianni started in open source, adding perceptual features to the SVT-AV1 video encoder through the SVT-AV1-PSY project. Work from that project on still-image tuning for AV1 was later adopted by libaom, Google's reference AV1 encoder. He has also written fast implementations of perceptual quality metrics and target-quality encoding tools, and co-founded The Codec Wiki, a reference for engineers working with codecs.
He works in C, Zig, and assembly, and measures every change against perceptual metrics before shipping it. He is based in San Francisco and consults through Halide Compression.
